What's one to do when you want a cerveza but you also want a margarita? Hi! It's us again — the cocktail dilemma problem solvers — and we're here to give you the solution you need to this heartwrenching conundrum. Have 'em both. Make a mashup. We promise that our beer margarita recipe is the best of both worlds combined into one frosty, yummy drink.
How to Make a Beer Margarita
For those days when we want all the drinks, we love beertails like the shandy. And the beer margarita is a beertail of a different stripe because it combines beer with tequila and all the tangy goodness you'll find in a classic marg.
Ingredients
- Lime wedge and salt for rim
- 1½ ounces silver tequila
- 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
- ¾ ounce orange liqueur
- ¼ ounce agave
- 4 ounces lager
- Ice
- Lime wedge for garnish
Instructions
- To prepare rim, rub the rim of the glass or mug with the lime wedge.
- With the salt on a saucer, dip either half or the entire rim of the glass in the salt to coat.
- In a cocktail shaker, add ice, tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and agave.
- Shake to chill.
- Strain into prepared glass over fresh ice.
- Top off with lager.
- Stir to mix.
- Garnish with lime wedge.
Variations and Substitutions
While you can't skip the beer in the beer margarita, you do have other options you can choose from when it comes to your drink. You can use less or more lime juice based on how sour you want your beer margarita to taste. Similarly, consider a lime-flavored beer to use. An IPA will make for a hoppier and unusual beer margarita, but it wouldn't be unheard of. Simply skip the agave for a margarita that isn't as sweet.
When served in larger batches, some beer margaritas call for equal parts lager, frozen limeade concentrate, tequila, and water. Combine these ingredients with ice in a pitcher, and serve over ice in a beer mug.
Garnishes
Much like the classic margarita, the beer margarita calls for a salt rim and lime wedge for its garnish. You can skip the salt rim, but keep in mind that a sugar rim might not be the best option for this style of margarita. However, you can still shake things up by using an orange or lemon wheel or slice.
A New-Age Margarita
The margarita might be the cocktail that has inspired the most variations. Few other drinks have the reach to be able to pull off the addition of beer, after all. Go ahead and shake off those margarita expectations and add some lager to your tequila. Consider this your invitation.
