Make White Wine Sangria Your Own
We all like what we like, so if there's something you think would taste fab in a white sangria, we say go for it. With light and fruity flavors, it's super easy to customize sangria. And if you wan to play with the classic, there's a basic formula you can easily follow.
White Wine
You'll need one bottle of dry white wine, such as a fruity and herbaceous sauvignon blanc, a crisp chardonnay, a light and aromatic viognier, a vibrant albariño, or a delightful torrontés. There aren't any wrong choices, although you may want to avoid super sweet wines or those that have been heavily oaked. You can even choose a sparkling wine and turn your sangria into a Champagne punch. If you do use sparkling wine, make sure you don't add the bubbles until you're ready to serve since you want to preserve the fizzy character that makes bubbly wines so fun and special.
Spirits
You'll need about ¼ to ½ cup of a spirit. We like brandy for white wine sangria, but you can try other clear or flavored spirits like vodka or gin. Or try liqueurs like amaretto or schnapps.
Citrus Juice
Opt for about ½ cup of freshly squeezed citrus juice. At least half of that should be lemon to balance the sweetness, but you can also use grapefruit, lime, tangelo, or orange juices. A blend of half and half orange and grapefruit juice is super refreshing.
Sugar
You don't need a lot of sugar — just a little to add a hint of sweetness. Use either two tablespoons of superfine sugar (superfine sugar dissolves the easiest) or opt for two tablespoons of honey or ¼ cup of simple syrup. If you use a sweeter wine or use ginger ale or lemon-lime soda in place of soda water, you can omit the sugar. Taste your sangria and add sugar if it isn't sweet enough for your tastes.
Fruit
Add as much fruit as you'd like. We love berries, peaches, nectarines, and other soft fruits, but feel free to add whatever is in season and sounds delicious to you.
Soda Water
Add soda water last, just before you serve to preserve the bubbles. You can also use another fizzy alternative, such as ginger ale, lemon-lime soda, or even flavored sparkling water. You can also add ice or just use super chilled ingredients to keep the sangria cold and refreshing.
Garnish
If you're using whole or cut fruit, then garnishes are optional, but it's always nice for presentation to have a mint or basil sprig and maybe a berry or citrus wedge for garnish.
