What Is a Hurricane Drink?

The Hurricane cocktail's origins are a bit of a mystery, but most believe that the drink was born in Pat O'Brien's New Orleans French Quarter bar during prohibition. In order to get one bottle of illegal whiskey, you had to purchase a crate full of rum, and so O'Brien invented the signature cocktail to use up the excess rum supply. In order to honor the drink's creation, a special glass was designed for it to be served in. This 'hurricane' glass was blown to resemble the barrel-shaped hurricane lamps that had been used for decades at this point.
